HYDRAULIC RE-MINING OPERATIONS
Hydraulic Re-mining of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is the most cost effective solution to reprocess material as well as environmentally sound. Paragon Projects specialises in creating a tailored turnkey design for optimal reclamation of your tailings storage facilities with our in-house design and manufacturing team.
OPERATION
The key to a successful hydraulic re-mining operation is a consistent flow rate and maximum slurry densities reporting to the main plant. Achieving this ensures optimal processing efficiency and minimises downtime.

Hydraulic re-mining
reduces the airborne dust problem often associated with fine tailings dumps and dry mining techniques. More and more the environmental is becoming an important factor to consider.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
A hydraulic re-mining operation requires as much detailed planning as any other surface mining operation.
The operation requires a properly trained team with highly experienced leadership.

The characteristics of the ore body will determine the pressure required to monitor the material.
Most typical designed water reticulations are where low pressure water feeds the high pressure pumps and then boosted to between 25 and 30 bar, with calculated volumes to keep the material in suspension.
The water cannons primarily break up the structure of the material mechanically through the contained energy in the jet stream.
Depending on the required production targets Paragon Projects team will design, manufacture and supply the required water cannons, hydraulic mining equipment for the operations to meet the deliverables.
In virtually all cases the slurried material needs to be kept “contained” and gravity feeds to the installed satellite / discharge pipe reporting to the slurry pump station (designed, manufactured, constructed by the Paragon Projects team) which transfers the slurrified material to the main plant.
KEY COMPONENTS OF HYDRAULIC RE-MINING
HIGH-PRESSURE WATER JETS
High-pressure water jets are used to mobilise tailings material, breaking it down and creating a slurry that can be pumped to processing facilities.
SLURRY TRANSPORT
The slurry, composed of water and tailings material, is transported via pipelines to a processing plant where valuable minerals are extracted.
MINERAL PROCESSING
At the processing plant, advanced techniques such as flotation, gravity separation, or leaching are used to recover valuable minerals from the tailings.
WATER MANAGEMENT
Efficient water management systems are crucial to hydraulic re-mining. Water used in the process is often recycled and reused to minimise impact and reduce operational costs.
ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING
Continuous monitoring of water quality, air quality, and the structural integrity of tailings facilities is essential to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to prevent contamination.

BENEFITS OF HYDRAULIC RE-MINING
RESOURCE RECOVERY
Hydraulic re-mining allows the recovery of valuable minerals that were not efficiently extracted during the initial mining operation. This can improve the overall yield and profitability of a mining project.
ENVIRONMENTAL REHABILITATION
By stabilising and rehabilitating tailings storage facilities, mining companies can reduce their environmental footprint. Which can mitigate risks such as dam failures and contamination.
WASTE REDUCTION
Hydraulic re-mining helps to reduce the volume of waste stored in tailings facilities. This not only minimises the environmental impact but also extends the lifespan of existing storage facilities.
COST-EFFECTIVE
Re-mining tailings can be more cost-effective than traditional mining because the material is already broken down and located at the surface, reducing the need for drilling, blasting, and other costly extraction processes.
FUTURE DIRECTIONS WITH HYDRAULIC RE-MINING OPERATIONS
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS
Ongoing advancements in hydraulic re-mining technology are improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the process. Innovations in water jet technology, slurry transport, and mineral processing are enabling better recovery rates and lower operational costs.
SUSTAINABLE FOCUS
There is a growing emphasis on sustainability in mining operations. Hydraulic re-mining aligns with this focus by providing a method to recover resources while reducing environmental impact and rehabilitating old mining sites.
INTEGRATION WITH TRADITIONAL MINING
Hydraulic re-mining can be integrated with traditional mining operations to enhance overall productivity. By treating tailings as a secondary source of minerals, mining companies can maximise resource utilisation and minimise waste.
Hydraulic re-mining represents a significant opportunity for the mining industry to improve resource recovery, reduce environmental impact, and enhance the sustainability of their operations.

CASE STUDIES
SOUTH AFRICAN GOLD MINES
Several gold mines in South Africa have successfully used hydraulic re-mining to extract residual gold from old tailings dams. This has not only improved their resource recovery but also helped in rehabilitating and repurposing large areas of land.
COPPER MINES IN CHILE
Hydraulic re-mining has been employed in Chilean copper mines to reprocess tailings and recover copper, as well as other valuable by-products like molybdenum. This process has contributed to more sustainable mining practices in the region.
SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED FOR YOU.
Here are some common FAQs answered for your convenience. Please contact us anytime for any additional questions you may have for us regarding our tailings services.
CONTACT USWhat is hydraulic re-mining and how does it work?
Hydraulic re-mining is a process that uses high-pressure water jets to extract material from existing tailings storage facilities. The water jets break down the tailings into a slurry, which is then transported via pipelines to a processing plant. At the plant, advanced techniques such as flotation, gravity separation, or leaching are used to recover valuable minerals from the slurry.
What are the main benefits of hydraulic re-mining?
The main benefits of hydraulic re-mining include resource recovery, environmental rehabilitation, waste reduction, and cost-effectiveness. It allows mining companies to extract valuable minerals from old tailings, reduce the environmental footprint by stabilising and rehabilitating tailings sites, minimise the volume of waste, and lower operational costs compared to traditional mining methods.
How does hydraulic re-mining contribute to environmental sustainability?
Hydraulic re-mining contributes to environmental sustainability by reprocessing and reducing the volume of tailings stored in tailings facilities. This helps to mitigate risks such as dam failures and contamination. Additionally, the process promotes the rehabilitation of old mining sites, restoring them to a more natural state and reducing the overall environmental impact of mining operations.
What types of minerals can be recovered through hydraulic re-mining?
Various types of minerals can be recovered through hydraulic re-mining, depending on the composition of the tailings. Commonly recovered minerals include gold, copper, silver, and other valuable metals. In some cases, re-mining can also recover by-products such as molybdenum and rare earth elements, enhancing the overall profitability of the operation.
